Portrait of Eberhard Licht

Eberhard Licht, born in 1955 in Meiningen, Thuringia, studied civil engineering and process engineering, and later went on to obtain a master’s degree in water and environmental engineering. He initially worked at a research institute in the construction industry and, during the first third of his life, experienced the solidarity and cohesion of the people in the GDR – an experience that continues to shape him to this day and gives him the conviction that a cooperative society is possible.

In the summer of 1989, he played an active role in the peaceful revolution. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he established a branch of a southern German environmental institute in Weimar and later founded his own accredited testing institute for industrial emission measurements in Berlin. He also attempted, through his own patent application, to shift freight transport onto the railways using toll data.

In 2010, he made a fundamental decision: he sold his companies and devoted himself from then on to looking after his two younger children. In the years that followed, he discovered how fulfilling care work can be when it is not underpinned by patriarchal norms. For several years, he volunteered at a homeless shelter in the Netherlands and engaged intensively with issues of social inequality.

His training as an engineer and process engineer enables him to view social contexts from a practical, technically grounded perspective. He was active in the climate movement and now devotes all his energy to developing a vision that frees work, people and the Earth from the constraints of market logic.
Eberhard Licht is married to a Spanish woman, has four children and lives in Berlin. He leads a minimalist lifestyle.
